The Modern Defense (also known as the Robatsch Defence after Karl Robatsch) is a hypermodern chess opening in which Black allows White to occupy the center with pawns on d4 and e4, then proceeds to attack and undermine this "ideal" center without attempting to occupy it himself. I tried Nigel Davies' but it was the usual sequence of annotated games. Lakdawala's looked better, but the best option for me is Tiger's Modern, for it has the same approach as Alburt-Chernin's book on the Pirc, based on game concepts rather than variations, so I'm reading that one and strongly suggest it to whoever wants to play the Modern at beginner to intermediate level at least.
