I tried Nigel Davies' but it was the usual sequence of annotated games. Lakdawala's looked better, but the best option for me is Tiger's Modern, for it has the same approach as Alburt-Chernin's book on the Pirc, based on game concepts rather than variations, so I'm reading that one and strongly suggest it to whoever wants to play the Modern at beginner to intermediate level at least.
